Park City, Utah Golf Courses Not Just For the Rich and Famous

By Craig Better |

Homestead Resort's layout is one of
the most scenic Park City, Utah
golf courses you can play.

On the advice of his doctors, Tiger Woods skipped hosting duties at his PGA Tour event this past weekend following his knee surgery in Park City, Utah.

It was there that one of our editors bumped into, er, crossed paths with the Woods family, as both parties were staying at the swanky Stein Eriksen Lodge. Our correspondent was there to anonymously inspect and evaluate Park City, Utah golf courses and accommodations.

For those who don't know, Park City is a renowned alpine resort mecca that each January serves as the hub of the Sundance Film Festival. Its historic Main Street is lined with trendy galleries, shops, boutiques, and restaurants where $40 entrees are commonplace.

Not surprisingly, Park City and its environs have become a haven for private country clubbers, but public golfers can enjoy their time in the sun on Park City, Utah golf courses, too.

For example, Wasatch Mountain State Park, about 25 minutes from Park City in Midway, Utah, is home to four golf courses that provide very worthy rounds and exceptional value. Two of the tracks, the Soldier Hollow Gold and Silver courses, are virtually treeless, while the holes on the Wasatch Mountain and Lake courses are often defined by tall trees.

All four eighteens are intriguing — especially the Gold and the Mountain courses, which incorporate plenty of elevation changes. The scenery is stunning, and there's no housing beside any of the fairways. Best of all, green fees on weekdays, weekends, or holidays in peak season are just $40 with a cart.

If you're interested in staying overnight while playing these Park City, Utah golf courses, the most charming and friendly lodging option is the Homestead Resort, which has an eclectic array of restored rooms and cottages, plus its own Gene Bates-designed golf course.

The course, designed by Bruce Summerhays is routed through a neighborhood and brings houses dangerously close to play on occasion, but the scenery is more varied and arguably more stunning than what you'll see at the Wasatch Mountain golf courses.

Be aware that the Homestead hosts a lot of corporate events, so it's best to plan your tee times for early or late in the day. If no outings are scheduled, however, the course will usually not be crowded at all.

Rooms at the Homestead Resort in Utah start at $239 per night (based on double occupancy), and can run as high as $559. As for golf, you can expect to pay anywhere between $35-$55 between Monday and Thursday, and $45-$65 on Fridays and weekends. Homestead encourages walk-up customers, so there's a $5 surcharge for booking prime tee times in advance. Subscription prices to our flagship publication, Golf Odyssey, start at $97, but you can try the next two issues (and our back-issue archive) for free at www.golfodyssey.com/trial.
