Chambers Bay Golf Course: Where to Stay When Playing the U.S. Open-Worthy Course on a Washington Golf Vacation

By Craig Better |

Aidan Bradley
Chambers Bay Golf Course is a "must play"
on a Washington golf vacation.

It's rare that we recommend taking a golf vacation to a given state for the sole purpose of playing one of its golf courses, but Chambers Bay Golf Course in Washington is good enough to justify such a trip.

Located 20 minutes from Tacoma and about an hour from Seattle, Chambers Bay Golf Course is the one you've undoubtedly been hearing about since it opened last June. You know that linksy municipal golf course that, after only seven months in existence, landed the 2015 U.S. Open (and the 2010 U.S. Amateur) and will bring America's championship to the Northwest for the first time ever? Yep, that's the one.

To be sure, we're not the first (and we certainly won't be the last) golf publication to tout the worthiness of building a golf vacation around Chambers Bay Golf Course, but we haven't seen much in the way of reliable accommodation recommendations.

Well, we made one of our anonymous visits to Chambers Bay Golf Course recently and we have two very different but very good suggestions if you want to include this course in your Washington golf vacation plans.

For maximum convenience and a quaint, homey feel, consider the Day Island B&B (dayislandbb.com). It's located less than four miles from Chambers Bay Golf Course literally at the water's edge on Puget Sound, with a captivating view of the Tacoma Narrows Bridge. You'll have the choice of a condo-style suite or two- or three-bedroom cottages, all of them with commanding views of the waterway. Prices range from $110-$430 per night.

In the heart of Tacoma is the stylish Hotel Murano (hotelmuranotacoma.com), one of five by Portland, Ore.-based Provenance Hotels, where 40 internationally acclaimed artists working in glass have lent their considerable talents to the overall design and decor of this unique and trendy hotel. Prices range from $169-$469 per night.

I just played Chambers Bay Monday, and it is a GREAT course! The greens are still developing (only 1 year old), but the layout is breathtaking. Especially memorable are #9 (a very elevated par 3), #10 (a medium par 4 that funnels between two huge dunes), and #14 (a mammoth par 4 that plays surprisingly more reasonable that it appears). The service is top-notch. Walking is mandatory, and it's a tough hike - much hillier than you would expect - so the investment in a caddie is worth it.
